Tips on Working with Large Format Tiles
DIYers and tilers – both love extra-large format tiles for the conveniences they offer. It’s not that they are a DIY-friendly material; even an experienced DIYer will need to work with one or two assistants to carry out the project safely and to avoid wastage and keep the cost down.
So, what are the advantages of large size tiles?
Fewer Tiles Required – You don’t need to buy tiles in bulk. If you are working with large format tiles and stones, you will need fewer tiles. And fewer tiles mean less work and shorter installation time. Though, you will need to allow the tiles to rest and cure for at least 24 to 48 hours after installation.
Fewer Grout Lines – When there are large format tiles on your walling or flooring, there are fewer tile joints on the tiled layout. With that, there are fewer grout lines too.
Less Busy Space – If you want to create a calm and serene indoor ambiance, extra-large format files are what you need. They make your floors and walls appear less busy by minimizing the number of grout lines.
Illusion of Spaciousness – According to interior design experts, extra-large format tiles make your small rooms appear larger.
How to Work with Extra-Large Format Tiles
- These tiles are large and heavy. So, you will need one or two assistants while working on the project. They will help you pick, move and install the tile. Which might be an added cost for you.
- You cannot and should not cut these tiles with manual cutting tools. There is always a risk of damage. Rent or buy heavy-duty stone or porcelain tile cutters to carry out this job.
- Use the right thin set mortar to ensure solid grip on the substrate and backerboard. The right type of mortar for extra-large format tiles is the one that has adequate sag resistance.
- Use spacers and other accessories to ensure right placement of tiles, as tiles installed once cannot be removed and reused.
- If you have never worked on such a project, hire a pro to get the job done.
